And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.’”
Luke 22:19-20
Recently, I was working out details to travel to Montana for my granddaughter’s wedding and weighing out the choices of driving 10 hours or hopping on a plane to the tune of $800. My concern was which would be less stressful on my knees. While thinking through this, I started listing what I called miracle potions that I might faithfully take each day leading up to the date of departure in the hopes that one might make it easier on my knees. I weighed out turmeric shots, bone broth, EVOO and couldn’t come up with anymore.
But then, I felt a presence next to me. Turning, I saw a man put his hand over his mouth and lean over to my ear and whisper “Communion”. And then he was gone.
Communion! Why hadn’t I thought of that? Who needs a magic potion when all that Jesus paid for on the cross is represented by the elements of communion?
Communion reminds us of the body of Christ that was broken for our healing and His blood shed for the forgiveness of our sins. Communion is a time of drawing near to Jesus and embracing all that His sacrifice provided for us. All sin and all sickness were placed on Jesus so that we would not have to carry them. He redeemed us from the curse of the law and brought us into a new and better covenant. A covenant that provides for our wholeness and healing.
Taking the elements of communion can be done in your home, with others or alone. The bread reminds us of His body and the cup reminds us of His blood that was shed.
I have been taking communion every day since that encounter. I had a wonderful trip to Montana and have treasured the moments of partaking of communion and stopping long enough in my day to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for me. And for you.
Thank You, Jesus, for the sacrifice You made for me, for my family and loved ones. Words cannot express my gratitude and amazement that You would go through all of that for me. Thank You for the reminder of taking reflecting and celebrating Your sacrificial gift through the partaking of communion. I am truly humbled by Your mercy and grace, amen.
