When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
II Kings 4: 25-26
Her son had just died. The son the prophet of God (Elisha) had told her she would have even though she wasn’t even asking for one and she begged him not to get her hopes up.
But, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son just as promised.
And then the unthinkable happened. The boy died.
The woman put laid him on the bed in Elisha’s room and shut the door and took off to find the prophet who spoke this boy into existence. Her husband tried to question her about why she was leaving and all she said was “Everything is all right.”
She rushed to meet the man of God and refused to talk to his servant. She told him “Everything is all right.” She only shared what had happened with Elisha.
What wisdom! How often when I am given bad news do I reach out to others to tell my story, others who care but may not have the words of God to speak over the situation? This woman knew to keep the story to herself until she was standing in the presence of the man who had delivered God’s word to her. Only he would have the power to help. She didn’t even tell her husband!
And sure enough, the prophet did help. He went back with her to her home and prayed. Then laying down on the boy he breathed his life into him and the boy was raised from the dead!
Please don’t hear me wrong, I am not saying don’t tell anyone the diagnosis. We need people especially, like-minded people who will agree with us for healing. We need people to share our concerns with as well. But we do need to be careful who those people are.
This woman knew that the man who carried God’s word to her was the only one she could trust to deliver healing to her son. And he did just that!! Her son came back to life!
Father, thank You for showing me through this woman, the wisdom of being careful who I share my story with. Help me to walk in faith when the evidence points to a different outcome than I have trusted You to bring about in my life. Help me to remember that Your word prevails and that nothing is impossible with You. I praise You for the miracles You have brought into my life and the miracles still to come. Thank You, thank You, thank You.
